Fifth Wedding Anniversary Gift

April 18, 2016

I was approached by a husband who wanted to commission a special piece for his wife for their 5th anniversary. He had written her a poem five years ago when they got engaged that he had never shown her and now wanted to give to her. The traditional gift for the 5th wedding anniversary is wood and he was hoping to incorporate that somehow.

I suggested burning the poem into wood. Because, well – I had had never done it before and it sounded like a fun new creative process to master!

We discussed which font to use and eventually decided the poem should be in the husband’s handwriting. We selected a smooth basswood plank with a natural bark edge. He sent me the text in his handwriting, which I then transferred onto the wood. I used a wood burning pen to trace the text and add some scrollwork to finish the piece.

The process was fascinating, and extremely sensory! As in – burning wood smell in my studio! I am so pleased with the way the piece turned out, and excited to play around with this medium more in the future!

Loved the opportunity to help this husband surprise his wife in such a special and unique way!
